Instant Messaging is unavailable

Having connectivity issues with a few folks where they connect from outside the lan. The users connect to the vpn and connectivity with Communicator is established but they get the "Instant Messaging is unavailable message". This is not the case with the majority of users, networking on the LAN/VPN side is solid. Wondering what steps if any I could try? I've already tested with uninstalling/reinstalling, testing with a fresh laptop with no AV/firewall turned on and still no luck.

Thanks-this helped. tcp/5222 was being blocked.
