What is Skype for SIP all about and how do I sign up?

Skype for SIP, currently in Beta by Skype, allows for ShoreTel
customers to leverage the Skype network for SIP Trunking. It also
allows for all ShoreTel based phones using Skype for SIP to call,
or be called by a Skype client at no cost. Customers can sign up
for the beta

I have not personally used Skype for VoIP. Can anyone tell me their
experiences of call quality with Skype?

Call quality has been great thus far in my testing. No issues there
to report.

Is a Siperator required?

The testing that we've done with the ShoreTel VPN appliance and
phones has actually shown that Skype to the exact same
locations(county wide) appear to work better on a consistant basis.
The down side of Skype then was that we weren't able to use PCM
with Skype. That could change if you could use Skype trunks into
the ShoreTel and the Skype phone in an Office Anywhere
configuration.

Hi Robert, yes the Ingate siperator is in fact required for this.

Norm, Do you have any white papers yet? We have several customers who signed up and want to beta test. Thanks

Hi Bien, there are a couple of docs that are available today, even though Skype still has Skype for SIP in the beta phase. Drop me an email sweinstock@shoretel.com and I can provide to you.

Can you provide the white papers on the Skype integration to me as well? Nathan.Russell@idealimage.com.. Will this mention any hardware or licensing requirement to make it work?

We did a trial with VoSky (http://www.vosky.com/), similar to Skype for SIP, which is an appliance that uses multiple Skype accounts for outbound calling. The connection to the ShoreTel System is established using SIP trunking.

Pros: Easy setup. Great Call Quality. Excellent long distance rates.

Cons: They could not port all numbers to the Skype network. Caller id was inaccurate (at the time they were working on correcting this issue). Shared resource for phone calls once calls reached the 'Skype cloud'. PCM worked fine for making single calls however conference calls were an issue.

It might be good to use as a secondary lower cost resource for long distance.
