Emailing ECC reports

Is there a guide anywhere anyone knows of for setting up the SMTP side of things for emailing reports?
i.e. best practice etc.
We have an ECC server on Windows 2008 and we just cannot get reports to send properly.
Some look like they do not go anywhere, somer seem to get rejected by the recipients server etc.
Should the SMTP service on the ECC server forward mail to the company's main exchange server for onward sending?
Any pointers here appreciated!

The SMTP settings are exactly the same as setting up email on the HQ server. You use the virtual host in windows and point to a known smtp relay.
