Using Lync 2013 to make calls

We have a ShoreTel server that we have used for all of our calling features as well as UM. However, we are looking to use Lync 2013 for UM and to provide some integration with other networks that require Lync. We have setup the Lync server to work with Shoretel to have presence, IM, video, etc. However, we are having no luck getting phone control working. We need to be able to make and receive calls from the Lync client while keeping our existing phone setup in place. Basically, we just want to replace the ShoreTel Communicator client with the Lync client. Our Lync server is a single server handling front end and mediation. I'm not finding any useful information about getting the two talking properly and would like some recommendations on how to proceed.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, and I'm starting to get the inclination that a gateway such as an AudioCodes is going to be required, but if it's possible without doing so that would be significantly more helpful.

Pre-Lync (Communications Server 2007 R2) call control was done by using the Shoretel CSTA server.
